2006 – Allison Coker, daughter of Milliard “Paul” and Maxine Coker, Philadelphia, PA and the granddaughter of Milliard and the late Wilma Young Coker.  A note from Allison... I am grateful for the opportunities that were provided to me through the family scholarship. Since receiving the scholarship I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BA in Political Science. Additionally, I did a year of national service as a City Year corps member. Currently, I work at United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey as a Development Coordinator. Thank you for all of your support!

2004 -Marcene Young Love, daughter of the late Clyde and Barbara Young, Detroit, MI and granddaughter of the late Carrie Spears Brown and the late Clyde A. Young. Marcene attended Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan and completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Science in Allied Health with a Minor in Health Care Management. Also, she attended Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Michigan for an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing and is now a Registered Nurse.

2002–Crystal Monique Howard Johnson, daughter Mr. & Mrs. Philip Howard, Birmingham, Al and granddaughter of the Mrs. Leager Howard. Dr. Crystal Howard Johnson, granddaughter of Mrs. Leager Spears Howard, daughter of Phillip and Marie Howard Sr. and a recipient of the Spears-Young family scholarship. I completed my undergraduate studies in 2003 at Tuskegee University (Tuskegee, AL) receiving a bachelor of science in Animal and Poultry Science with summa cum laude honors. After accomplishing my undergrad degree, I continued my educational success with receiving a doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. During veterinary school, I participated in several internships specializing in Laboratory Animal Medicine to include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Emory University- Yerkes National Primate Center, Tulane National Primate Center, Wake Forest University, and Alamogordo Primate Facility-Holloman Air force Base.  With this interest and experience, I was accepted into the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Laboratory Animal Medicine Residency Program. While at the CDC, I had the opportunity to work with scientist developing cures and treatments for diseases that affect our community daily. After completing my residency, I set for the national board exam for laboratory animal medicine and became board certified in Laboratory Animal Medicine.

Currently, I am Head of Veterinary Translational Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine (New York, New York). I also serve as an Assistant Professor in the Center for Comparative Medicine and Surgery and Director of the Behavior Management Program. This profession gives me the opportunity to provide outstanding care for animals while working with scientist developing cures for heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, infectious diseases and more.  I presently live in the Westchester County area of New York with my husband Joe Johnson and our three kids (Honey –Yorkie, Bandit –Great Dane, and Lexi-Yorkie).

Thank you to the Scholarship committee for blessing me with this scholarship many years ago to assist with my education and to help me reach my dreams. Please continue to help young people striving to be better to make this world a better place.
